How do I get my motorcycle licence?
Step One: Learn How to Ride (optional)
The two-day Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training Course is designed to prepare riders for riding on the road. It is not designed to teach you how to ride. If you are unsure whether biking is for you, are not confident riding a bicycle and balancing on two wheels, or would like to get some additional training before undertaking the Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training course, try our popular Head Start Course.

Step Two: Check your eligibility
To be eligible for our motorcycle training, you must:
- Be 16 years and 6 months old.
- Be a resident of Tasmania.
- Have successfully completed the Road Rules Knowledge Test at Service Tasmania.
- Must not have a suspended or cancelled licence.
- Provide photo ID as proof of identification.
- Be medically fit enough to ride a motorcycle. If you have a medical condition or take regular prescribed medication, please call our friendly Customer Service Team on 1300 366 640 so that they can help you with the process before making your booking.
Step Three: Complete the two day Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training Course
You will need to complete a two-day Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training Course to gain your learners licence. The course takes place over two full days (15 hours), on the weekend or weekdays. Ensure you have completed the Road Rules Knowledge Test at a Service Tasmania office prior to attending the Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training course.
Step Four: Visit Service Tasmania to receive your learners licence
Visit Service Tasmania with your Certificate of Competency (acquired at your Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training Course), completed application form here and your ID.
Step Five: Practice Your Skills
You must hold your learner’s licence for a minimum of six months before you can apply to complete the Pre-Provisional Test, and you need to wait 28 days after your Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training course before you can complete your Check Ride. Note that you must complete the Check Ride at least 28 days before your Pre-Provisional Test.

Step Six: Complete the Check Ride (CR)
The Check Ride (CR) needs to be completed at least 28 days prior to completing your Pre-Provisional Test. The earliest a CR can be completed is 28 days after completing your Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training course.
Step Seven: Complete your Pre-Provisional Test
This final testing component is a 1.5-hour assessment, including an on-range riding skill assessment and an on-road safe riding assessment. You must complete the Pre-Provisional Test within 12 months of receiving your learner’s licence, and you must have completed the Check Ride at least 28 days beforehand to avoid your licence expiring.

New to motorcycling? If you’ve never ridden a motorcycle before, we highly recommend our Learn to Ride course. This beginner-friendly course is designed to introduce you to the basics of motorcycle riding in a safe and supportive environment. Please note that the Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training Course was designed by State Growth and focuses on preparing riders to ride safely on the road, rather than teaching absolute beginners how to ride.
Prerequisites: You must be at least 16 years and 6 months of age. You must have successfully completed the Road Rules Knowledge Test at Service Tasmania. You must be medically fit (See FAQs). You must NOT be currently cancelled or suspended from driving.

CHECK RIDE (CR)
Head screwed on? Check! Bum on seat? Check! You’re good to go on your check ride. The Check Ride (CR) is a mandatory three-and-a-half-hour course that makes sure you are proficient in the safety and practical skills of riding a bike in order to pass the Pre-Provisional Test. On both range and road, you’ll progress from pre learner training with physical and mental safety skills. You’ll also get feedback and guidance from our experienced trainers to improve your riding technique.
- The Check Ride must be taken at least 28 days prior to taking the Pre-Provisional Test. (The Pre-Provisional Test must be taken no later than twelve months after receiving your Learner Licence).
- Choose between midweek and weekend courses in a range of locations.

PRE-PROVISIONAL TEST
You’ve got this. The final mandatory step in Tasmania’s motorcycle graduated licensing scheme. The one-and-a-half-hour assessment brings together your previous training and real-world riding experience, to test your skills. It includes an on-range riding skill assessment and an on-road safe riding assessment.
The Pre-Provisional Test may be taken six months after obtaining a learner’s licence and at least 28 days after the Check Ride (as long as you have held your learner’s licence continuously for at least 6 months without a suspension).

PRACTICE AND PRE-PROVISIONAL TEST
Take no chances. The Practice and Pre-Provisional Test binds an additional one-hour practice with an experienced trainer, with all the other aspects of the Pre-Provisional Test. This practice will build your confidence and enhance your chances of a successful pass.
- The Pre-Provisional Test will take place directly after the practice session.

WORKPLACE TRAINING
We began providing Australian Workplace Training in 1990 – and if we do say so ourselves, we’re very good at it. Our registered courses have achieved the Australia Qualifications Framework at the highest possible level. We work closely with everyone from Government agencies to Agricultural and food delivery businesses, to train staff and significantly reduce the risk of accidents, for two-wheel, Quad and side-by-side vehicles.

How do I get my motorcycle licence?
Step One: Learn How to Ride (optional)

If you are unsure whether biking is for you, are not confident riding a push bike and balancing on two wheels, or would like to get some additional training before undertaking the MPA, try our popular Head Start Course.
Step Two: Check your eligibility
To be eligible for our motorcycle training, you must:
- Be 18+ years old
- Be a resident of Victoria
- Free of any restrictions that would disqualify you from holding or achieving a Victorian Learner Permit.
- Hold a current Victorian Car Learner’s Permit, or a Victorian Car Licence OR have passed a VicRoads road rules test at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre and received a VicRoads Customer Number.
- Be medically fit enough to ride a motorcycle. If you have a medical condition or take prescribed medication, please call our friendly Customer Service team so that they can help you with the process. You may need to provide the relevant medical reports to us before you book your assessment. You may be required to have an initial medical assessment to establish your capacity to ride a motorcycle.
Step Three: Complete your Two Day Learner Permit course – Motorcycle Permit Assessment Course (MPA).
Choose from midweek or weekend available courses to gain your Learner’s Permit. Since you will also complete the required eyesight and written motorcycle knowledge test, make sure you have spent time studying the Victorian Rider handbook before attending the course.
Step Four: Practice Your Skills
Whilst there’s no minimum wait time between completing your MPA and Check Ride, you must wait at least three months after your MPA and at least one month after your Check Ride before you can attempt the Motorcycle Licence Assessment (MLA). You must complete all three within a period of 15 months. In the meantime, practice your skills and consider taking a Stay Upright private lesson with our experienced instructors who can help with any specific areas of your riding technique you’d like to improve.
Step Five: Complete the Check Ride (CR).
The CR needs to be completed at least one month prior to completing your Motorcycle Licence Assessment.
Step Six: Take a Hazard Perception Test (if you don’t hold a Driver’s Licence)
If you don’t hold a Victorian Driver’s Licence, you will need to head to VicRoads to undertake a Hazard Perception Test.
Step Seven: Complete your Motorcycle Licence Assessment (MLA)
This final testing component is a 1.5-hour assessment, including an on-range riding skill assessment and an on-road safe riding assessment. You must complete the MLA within 15 months of receiving your Learner’s Permit to avoid your licence expiring.

I’m new to riding a motorbike – will the Learner’s course teach me how?
The Pre-Learners Motorcycle Training course is an assessment designed by the Department of State Growth. What happens in the training course?
Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training Course: This course is delivered over two full days. Throughout the course, you will learn key skills to safely ride a motorcycle, including, but not limited to, safe mount and dismount, major and minor controls, riding posture, cornering, braking and roadcraft skills. The course finishes with two assessments: One conducted on the range, the other on the road.
Check Ride Course: The Check Ride (CR): is designed to reinforce safe riding skills and behaviours on the road. It expands on the skills you learnt during your Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training Course and includes an on-range and on-road component and assessment.
Pre-Provisional Test: The Pre-Provisional Test is the final step in obtaining your motorcycle licence. It is a one-on-one assessment that lasts one and a half hours and is divided into two parts. The first part evaluates skills on the range, followed by a road assessment.
What should I wear?
You must wear long sleeves, long pants and sturdy footwear (no steel caps). We provide the bike, helmet and gloves on all licensing courses. You are welcome and encouraged to bring your own bike for the Check Ride (CR) and Pre-Provisional Test, because you will be most familiar with it.
How old do I have to be to obtain a learners licence?
You must be at least 16 years 6 months of age. Please see our step-by-step guide for more details.
What happens if I am late?
If you don’t arrive on time, you will miss the safety briefing and therefore won’t be able to start the course. You will need to book (and pay) again.
What happens if I can’t make my course or I need to change my date?
Changes can be made to your course booking by providing 7 days notice in writing to customerservice@stayupright.com.au.
An Administration Fee may apply.
If you are sick on the day of your course, Stay Upright will transfer you to another course, so long as a Doctors’ Medical Certificate is provided, dated the date of your scheduled course and provided within 2 business days of the course date.

What if I have a medical condition?
To obtain a Tasmanian motorcycle licence, you must meet the fitness to drive requirements as set out on the Austroads website – www.austroads.com.au

I have never ridden a motorcycle before – can I give it a try before committing to the Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training Course?
The Pre-Learner Motorcycle Training Course is a competency based course, with an assessment, so it’s good to have some balance and have ridden a bicycle.
Give me a break! And what about lunch?
Yes, our courses include scheduled breaks, but our trainers are better on the track than they are in the kitchen, so you will need to bring your own lunch and refreshments.
What does LAMS mean?
LAMS is short for ‘Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme’ – and are bikes approved for Learners. A LAMS bike has an engine capacity of between 251 and 660cc, with a power output of less than 150kw per tonne. You can find a list of approved bikes here.
