FAQs

The length of time you can hold your motorcycle learner licence depends on which state you’re in, but most states require a minimum learner period of approximately three months before you can progress to the next stage. The first step, your motorcycle learner course, also varies from state to state. In NSW, this runs over two half-days, while VIC, QLD, TAS and the ACT run it as one full day. Once you’ve completed your learner course, there are additional steps to progress towards your full motorcycle licence, and these also differ by state. Visit your state page to find out the specific requirements and next steps where you live.

To ride a motorcycle on the road, you need a motorcycle learner licence — a car learner’s licence (or even a full car licence) doesn’t allow you to ride a motorcycle. You’ll need to complete the motorcycle learner course specific to your state to obtain your motorcycle learner licence before you can legally ride on the road. Once you have your motorcycle learner licence, you can progress through the following steps toward your full motorcycle licence, which vary by state.
